The main definition of hydropower is the energy gathered or extracted from the water. It is not actually extracting but more like using its natural force to generate power. Early civilization have been aware of this method and have used it to produce mechanical energy, making it turn wheels and gears to grind wheat and other food materials, or to generate windmills. The modern civilization have harness its potential and used it to turn the turbines that would generate electricity through friction.
