Geothermal Power

The race to the discovery of an alternate source of energy is on. Researchers discovered various power sources that could produce different forms of energy that is clean, renewable and environment – friendly. The whole point of this surge in clambering for the most efficient energy source is to have a major energy source that is clean and would not pollute the earth, thus, cutting the need for fossil fuel, which is killing our planet softly by being the cause of its eventual destruction through global warming. This article is all about Geothermal Power, one of the cleanest and greenest sources of electrical energy and heat energy. A renewable source that can never be exhausted. Here you shall learn facts about it, and its definition as well as the advantages of having it around and the reason why we should be using it as our main energy source rather than relying on fossil fuel. By the end of this article you will fully understand why there is a great need to stop relying on fossil fuel and you will be enlightened on the ongoing fight to save our planet from utter destruction. This is serious.

Geothermal Power

Geothermal Power works like this: it gathers the geothermal heat from down below the earth’s surface and use it to generate heat and electricity. It is capable of using the heat to create various forms of energy. Since the heat of the earth is renewed every day and will be replaced as long as the sun exists which means billions of years, geothermal energy is indeed an inexhaustible power source, which would make it a cheap energy source. Also, it doesn’t create polluting emissions, heat has no harmful byproducts so therefore it gives the world a favor by not polluting it as much as fossil fuels do but serves the same function that it offers. Or almost. Geothermal Power is created specifically by going through the following process:

- After finding a suitable heat source underneath the earth’s surface, pipes are drilled down unto the heated rocks. These rocks are heated by magma and other naturally hot materials underneath. The steam that this rock produces is diverted to the pipes which are then connected to the turbine. The steam is used to turn these turbines which would later produce electricity.

Geothermal Power is currently generating electricity to 24 countries worldwide. The energy it produces for all 24 countries could add up to as much as 8.9 GIGAWATS of electricity, enough to keep 6 million homes lighted with electricity. This is quite not much compared to fossil fuel but this is a good sign that countries are already waking up to the fact that we need to change. Surveys say that the consumption of geothermal energy has risen from 2000 up to 2005, from 7972.7 MW to 8933 MW. This is almost 0.2 percent of the world’s total energy consumption. It is now the fastest growing energy source and has been applied in many different ways like in geothermal heat pumps which is installed in 1.4 million homes around the globe
